Gowanus Townhouse

This ground-up townhouse draws its material and formal inspiration from the industrial history of the Gowanus neighborhood. Designed for a graphic designer's family of three, the residence includes: 3 bedrooms, 2 1/2 baths, a dedicated office space, and a den. The exterior of the building is clad in custom sized insulated concrete blocks with a formula of specially sized aggregate. These utilitarian masonry units are finished to show off the various textures and colors of the different stone within. The glazing system are a series of sliding aluminum windows that frame both interior and exterior views.

The entryway at the street level is recessed behind a gridded gate with an integrated planter. This transitional area is perfect for storing bicycles and miscellaneous outdoor gear. The home culminates on the top floor with a bespoke workspace and library. This space is designed to be multi-functional and provide a peaceful environment for research and creative work.

A sliding door leads to the primary bath which is finished in terracotta plaster walls and green marble tiles. A custom evergreen marble vanity tops off the calm and luxurious space.

Millwork and formal volumes strategically hide mechanical ductwork throughout the home. The heart of the home is organized around the central suspended stair which orients and brings gentle, diffuse light throughout the spaces.
