Upper West Side Townhouse

This Upper West Side townhouse is a contemporary interpretation of the classic New York typology. Featuring a blend of transitional and modern design elements, the clients asked us to re-envision a few key areas: the staircase, kitchen and living/dining room.

The staircase has been designed with the theme of ‘lightness’ and incorporates cantilevered steel treads clad with a walnut finish to match the existing floors. A skylight tops the stairwell and brings diffuse light into the heart of the home. Softly recessed areas along the stairwell are custom designed around the client’s art collection. In the dining room, a stainless steel clad ‘cabinet of curiosities’ provides a home for art, books, and storage. The existing herringbone floors are refinished and maintain the original patina and charm. The existing fireplace was in disrepair, so we proposed cladding the brick in a plaster finish with a precast concrete backsplash to match for durability. The kitchen is completed gutted and replaced with custom lacquered cabinetry in hues of soft green. The same plaster finish is used to clad the island, and the space is paired with brass finishes that will patina over time.
