Clinton Hill Loft
A bright and airy home designed with custom, multi-functional millwork pieces.
This loft celebrates the expansive ceilings and bright natural light of this former factory building. We designed a new kitchen and a series of tailored millwork interventions for the owners of this apartment. The kitchen is designed to be both an adaptable working kitchen and an object of display within the open plan living/dining room. Rooms are painted simply to reflect light throughout, and furnishings are designed for multi-functional use. Existing maple floors are refinished in a light sheen throughout providing a calm backdrop for the owners' verdant plant collection.
The kitchen features white oak cabinets paired with Carrara marble counters and sage green tiles. Unlacquered brass fixtures on the lower cabinets provide a spot of elegance that complement the found knobs above. Each room has purpose built millwork storage pieces that take advantage of awkward spaces and existing infrastructure.

A picture rail on the upper cabinets highlights objects for display and a custom wooden cutting board caps the end of the peninsula worksurface - incorporating walnut, cherry, and maple woods in a dynamic pattern.
Inspired by Italian modernist design, this custom Birch cabinet has a grid of apertures that show off mirrored glassware. The circular openings double as finger holds to open the doors.
A terracotta painted bookshelf fits snugly into an awkward corner and over the baseboard radiator. A removable panel allows access to valves below.
A custom daybed (below) is designed to pull-out into a queen sized bed for guests. The durable chartreuse fabric by Maharam complements the variety of green tones throughout the home. The adjacent birch side table cleverly hides the cat's litter box.
The floor plan maintains the original layout of the apartment and is enhanced by intentional millwork interventions throughout the space. The millwork here is crafted from warm wood tones, which contrasts invitingly with the lighter wall colors, creating a cozy respite from the city.
A low, white oak bookshelf (below) is again built to fit around the existing baseboard radiator. This piece doubles as a window bench for lounging and reading. We paired two classic modern designs in the bedroom - a bedside table by USM and lamp by Artemide - with a timeless shaker wardrobe made of cherry wood.
